2. Business Start-up - Checklist for Starting a Small
Business
------------------------------------------------------------
Thinking of becoming a new business owner? Read our checklist
first... it may mean your success or failure.

Starting and managing a business takes motivation, desire
and talent. It also takes research and planning. We have
prepared a checklist to help you see what awaits you as an
entrepreneur.

Your answers to these questions will help you conceptualise,
formulate and understand your planned business - and whether
this business fits your personality and that you really want
to do and have the capability to do.

It may not be possible to know everything at the very
beginning, but research and planning will help you minimise
the unknowns and help you become better prepared. Always
remember that lack of planning is one of the leading causes
of business failures.

When you start a business, your goal is to see it succeed,
and you can only do so if you are able to control all the
variables and turn them into your favour.

CHECK YOUR IDEA
What niche will my business fill? Before you actually launch
or expand a business, spend time checking out the market for
your new product or service. Since it is easier to sell a
product or service for which a need already exists, look for
problems that are being created because the right product or
service does not exist, then challenge yourself to provide it.

What services or products will I sell? Ideas for businesses
come from many sources. You can turn your interest or hobby
into a business. Sell what you know, and put to work
technology and equipment that you already have. Use your
imagination to find a need and fill it.

Is my idea practical, and will it fill a need? If it is not
available and if there appears to be a need for it, these
factors are in your favour. Conduct market research to find
out if there is a need for your product or service before
committing a great deal of time and money to the project.

Take the time to identify your customers and find the means
to get your products or services to them. In order to be
successful, you must know your market.

Who is my competition? There are two kinds of competition:
direct and indirect. Direct competition will be a business
offering the same product or service to the same market.

Indirect competition is a company with the same product or
service but a different market. Identify all your
competitors, look for their strengths and images, and
evaluate their image and their markets.

Can I deliver a better quality service? Build on what you
know and do best. Look for marketable products or services
compatible with your work background or business contacts,
or those that tie into your professional or personal fields
of interests. If you already have a good understanding of
the field you would like to enter as a business owner, it
will be much easier to market your business.

Can I create a demand for my business? The difference between
financial success and failure will depend on your management
and marketing skills; your clever approach to the
marketplace; the way the business idea is publicised or
advertised; the way the product is packaged, presented or
delivered; or the zest with which the service is performed.

OPERATIONAL ASPECTS
Once you've determined that your idea is feasible, answer
these questions:
What skills and experience do I bring to the business? A
logical first step for the undecided is to list potential
areas of personal background, special training, educational
and job experience, and special interests that could be
developed into a business.

Is it a business that suits your personality and tastes? The
business you choose is one that you feel good about and fires
your imagination. Enthusiasm can be a priceless ingredient
in the formula for success!

What will be my legal structure? Understand the advantages
and disadvantages to each form of organisation. The type of
legal format you choose will depend on your need for capital,
your type of business, when you want to start your business,
your ability to finance your business, the number of people
involved in the business, the liabilities and risks you are
willing to assume, your personal tax situation, your plan
for taking money out of the business, your plan for
continuing the business if something should happen to you,
and your long-range business plan.

How will my company's business records be maintained? Good
Record keeping provides you with tax information that can
easily be retrieved and verified. It also provides you with
information that you can use to analyse your business.

Accurate financial statements will help you to see trends
and implement changes during the life of your business. On
the other hand, poor record keeping can cause you a multitude
of problems and may result in audits, penalties and even the
termination of your business.

What insurance coverage will I need? Today's world of rapidly
expanding technology goes hand-in-hand with a society steeped
in lawsuits. The most innocent business owner can find
himself/herself involved in legal actions against the
business.

In addition to liability, there are many other insurance
considerations such as fire, flood, earthquake, auto, theft,
worker's compensation, health insurance, etc. that need to be
addressed during the period of ownership.

What are my resources? In order to determine what you have
available for a business investment you should determine your
net worth on a personal financial statement. If this is not
enough (as it often is the case), you can seek personal
contributions and support from family and friends.

You can also seek money from banks and lending institutions,
but only if you could offer liquid assets as security. Other
sources include government-assisted loans, taking on a
partner or investors, and joint venture capitalists.

What financing will I need? The lack of sufficient and ready
capital can quickly lead to business failure. You need to
determine whether you need to borrow money, how much you
need and when you will need it. Check out possible sources
of financing available to meet your needs. Most importantly,
know how much financing could cost you.

Where will my business be located? Your most important
consideration in choosing your location is your ability to
satisfy your market. Your customers must be able to reach
your business easily, safely and pleasantly.

Other considerations include the location of the competition,
sources of supply, availability of labour force and square
footage costs. Consider early on whether you want to have an
online presence to improve market reach.

What will I name my business? The name you choose will have
a great deal of bearing on the image you project. Be sure
that the name you choose is available for use. Avoid cute
and clever names; they do not project a businesslike image.

Make your name description to advertise your product or
service, and consider alphabetical listings in the directory.

HOME-BASED BUSINESS
If you are starting a home-based business, you will want to
answer these additional questions:
Does my home have the space (preferably separate) for a
business?

Whether you allow customers or clients into your home office
or not, you need to give special consideration to where you
work. Ideally, your office will be located away from the main
family activity, such as a spare bedroom, or even the garage.

Can I successfully run the business from my home? If you are
going to operate out of your home, there are several things
you can do to ensure that you will be more successful.

Conduct your business in the most professional and efficient
way. You need to organise your workspace and set business
hours. Protect your work hours, inform your family and
friends that you are serious about your business, and will
need to work without interruption. Be self-disciplined. Most
importantly, expend extra effort to prove credibility and
attract customers.

Can I deal with the isolation of working from home? One of
the most difficult problems of a home-based worker is the
feeling of isolation. To counteract this feeling, you can
join professional business groups, plan weekly lunches with
colleagues or other home workers, and network with people
inside and outside your profession.

4. Controlling Web Content
------------------------------------------------------------

Some basic advice on how to control Internet content
available to younger users.

Controlling web content from home is not easy, two minutes
and any nine-year-old can find some of the most distasteful
pornography ever propagated. The Internet is a haven for
perverts and weirdo's from web sites to chat rooms,
certainly not the place to let loose younger users without
an adult present.

But you can exert some control over what they can and can
not view, if you have to leave them alone.

Basic control is already installed on your computer system
on the very thing you view the Internet with, your browser.

For Internet Explorer 5 users go to 'Tools', then 'Internet
Options'. Select the Content tab and then in the Content
Advisor box click 'Enable'. You will then be presented with
a web page rating system, Internet Explorer uses will be
using the RSACi system.

Here you can set levels for language, nudity, sex and
violence. And on the General tab you can set a Supervisor
password so your little "darlings" can't undo your
censorship.

These systems work on the basis that the web site owner
registers with the relevant service provider, and places
rating tags into their web pages. However it is only as
secure as the web site owner wishes, for instance the owner
could rate their pages incorrectly or even misleadingly on
purpose.

These browser censorship controls are a good starting point
for controlling what younger viewers can see without you
being present, but of course should never be relied upon to
replace parent/adult supervision.

More information on parental control can be found at:

5. E-mail & News Geek Speak
------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever received an e-mail with this in it 'RTFM' or
this :-O and wondered what the sender meant! Well if you
have here is a quick run down of a few basic abbreviations
used on the Internet, in news groups, and in e-mails in the
ever increasing quest for users to save a few key strokes.

;-) -Light sarcasm
:-> -Heavy sarcasm
:-( -Displeasure
:-D -Shock or surprise
:-O -Shout

BTW -By the way
RTFM -Read the funny manual
TTFN -Ta ta for now
ROTFL -Rolling on the floor laughing

------------------------------------------------------------
6. +$%VIRUS ALERT%+$> - Password Protection
------------------------------------------------------------
The problem of computer hacking/cracking and virus
production and distribution is on the increase. This
unsavoury pastime seems to be propagated partly by an urge
to simply find out how things work and then take them apart,
and partly just to be destructive for the sake of it.

The Internet is a wonderful place with so much technology
and knowledge. Incredible, constructive things can be created
with it, you can share this knowledge and your experiences
with others.

So why do people want to hack/crack and build viruses?

What must you know to protect yourself and your computer or
your business? Let's start with the basics, the thing you
probably do every day, connect to the Internet and download
your e-mail.

To connect you need a user name and password. This allows
you to connect to your ISP's mail server. If you give this
user name and password to anyone else, they can also connect
to that same mail server from their computer. They can
download a copy of every e-mail you receive and leave a copy
on the server for you.

So what is your user name? It is quite probably your e-mail
address so we are half way there. But your password now this
is the tough bit, or rather, let's see how smart you have
been?

Is it the name of one of your children? Your dogs name? Your
birth date? Your car registration number? Your mothers maiden
name? You're social security number? You telephone number?
If I knew you, and I could guess it, it should take about 30
minutes to access your personal or company e-mail and you
will never know.

Ok, so you have been a little smarter than this you have
chosen a word a random like 'cabbages' it has no association
with you whatsoever, except you once picked them for extra
money one vacation. And I would never guess it.

WRONG! It's easy because you used a word. That's right a
word, any word will do. I can use a program of which there
are over 150 and counting on the Internet that I can run
until it finds that word. It has all day to run it contains
the dictionary, it's a program it never sleeps, it never
eats. 'IT CAN NOT BE STOPPED' (Sorry Terminator my favourite
movie). Have you ever played chess against a computer?

If you use a password for anything, to access the Internet,
download e-mail, access your web site hosting account or
even an online diary make it a good password.

This is a password:
qlYfdUu5847dFg46s8 A SERIOUS PASSWORD
18 random letters upper and lower case and numbers.
qlYfdUu5847d this is also a password
qlYfdUu5 and this is too, JUST!

If you think you can't remember this think again, you are a
human, better than any computer.

Or you can always write it down. How about on that postit
sticker stuck on the edge of your monitor? Don't bother,
I have already copied it from there!

Do you know and trust everyone that has access to your
office? How about your employees (now we are really getting
paranoid). What is your company policy on giving out your
passwords to employees? What measures do you have in place
to change those passwords if an employee leaves? Always
REMEMBER your most important passwords.

So you have a good password and you keep it safe. I could
never guess it or get access to it. But have you ever heard
of social engineering? That's where you trust me, so you
just give me your password.

No way I here you say!

It goes like this. You get a telephone call. It's your ISP
here we are having a problem with e-mail jammed on the
server on your account. A lot of your IMPORTANT mail is not
getting through to you. But don't worry we really do
apologise, we are working on it. We need to check it's going
to the correct accounts, can you just read back your user
name and password JUST FOR SECURITY
SO THAT WE CAN CHECK, you shouldn't normally by the way.
That's great thanks it should be sorted in a few hours and
you don't need to do anything else. Bye…

In other words SO LONG SUCKER!

That's very basic but some of the best systems
Administrators have been fooled. Don't be one, paranoia is
your password friend.

Next month downloading viruses. hee… hee… hee… ;->

7. Positive Creativity
------------------------------------------------------------
I wrote this article after a conversation with a colleague
who had all but given up. As I listened to this lost soul
pour his heart out with one negative thought after another,
I thought to myself, it's no wonder he's failing. If I had
an attitude like that towards life and business I would have
quit trying to succeed on the internet a year ago, or even
today.

I tried to instil the power of positive thought in this
person and I sincerely hope that he's going to hang in
there. There is something positive in every aspect of life,
whether it be success or failure.

Positive Creativity is a way of using your imagination to
create positive results. You already use this technique in
your daily rituals with or without knowing it. Everybody uses
this "Positive Creativity" in his or her daily lives. Many
of us use it in a completely unconscious way every day.

Unfortunately, too many of us have such an overabundance of
Negative concepts about life, love and experiences. We too
often believe that limitations, difficulties and plain old
bad luck are our lifetime partners.

In believing this consciously or unconsciously, we
negatively create problems in life for ourselves.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to learn
how to use Positive Creativity in everyday life, thus
learning to use it in the business arena as well. If you can
learn to use your positive creative imagination in a more
conscious way, you can create enjoyment, love, fulfilment
and ultimately business and sales.

Positive Creativity is not something you learn in class or
from a book. It's something that you nature and develop
within yourself. It's a way of doing things by leaving your
negative thoughts behind you.

Your imagination gives you the ability to create a picture or
structure an outcome in your mind. Once you create a clear
picture of what want and focus on that goal, it can become
reality using "Positive Creativity".

This goal could be anything from love, to a new car, to a
new home, to a new business idea.

An important thing to realise here, is that if you dream big,
but think small you will have a "small" result. Dreams are
important, but unless you are prepared to put them into
action, by doing something about those big dreams, they will
always remain only dreams. Use your Positive Creativity to
lead you down your path of success and help you make your
dream a reality.

Your dreams must be converted from abstract visions by
positively creating concrete thoughts and plans. Once you
have a worthwhile dream, it is time to stop dreaming and
start creating. This requires the use of "Positive
Creativity".

I'm not saying rush into your dreams blindly, but being
cautious does not mean being negative. Stop, relax and begin
to think positively about what it is you want. Use your
Positive Creativity to plan and strategize. Get that
positive feeling within yourself and begin to plan.

Too often people don't realise how negative thought hinders
their success in life. You must have a positive outlook and
you must learn how to use your "Positive Creativity". You
must mentally experience it as if it has already happened.
Not only does this help your Positive Creativity, but aides
you in your planning.

In Closing:
If you consider what I have said here, I mean seriously
consider it, and make positive thought a part of your life,
you may want to prepare yourself for some awesome results!
